WHAT IS WILKS FENDERING MADE OF?

To meet the requirements of most boat fendering needs, Wilks fendering is available in many different materials to provide optimal performance in the product’s designed application. Information for each profile can be found on their shop listing or in the Wilks Marine Profiles Brochure.

It includes various PVC grades, aluminium, and stainless steel. Discover which material is right for you here.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RIGID PVC AND ALUMINIUM BODIES?

Essentially both products are suitable for similar purposes. The primary one being to complement a boat’s clean lines whilst also retaining a PVC insert which will act as a rub rail. Both will bend to the average bow or transform easily. So, for the most part, the choice between rigid PVC and aluminium bodies is one based on personal preference.

Although, for downward curves such as where the gunwale curves into a bathing platform, rigid PVC may be more suitable. As with the application of heat whilst fitting the profile it is able to conform to the needed angles easier.

Be sure to make your fendering work for your boat. If you are aiming for a more modern, contemporary look then consider the range of rigid PVC bodies with pre-drilled stainless steel inserts, as an alternative to using PVC inserts.

WHAT ARE THE PVC GRADES?

As all boats are often very different, Wilks fendering is available in many different materials. This information for each profile can be found on their shop listing or in the Wilks Marine Profiles Brochure. For more information regarding the material of Wilks fendering read here.

WHAT IS A RIGID STRIP FOR?

Our Rigid PVC Fixing Strips are to be used with our range of B and D fender profiles. They are inserted within the profile prior to fitting to provide additional strength and act as a continuous washer. This prevents the fixings from pulling through the flexible body when placed under pressure.

WHAT IS CORD PLUGGING?

Our PVC cord is used to plug the holes in the face of our D fender profiles following installation. Manufactured in a UV stabilised, phthalate free material, our products are as kind to the environment as possible whilst delivering excellent performance.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT FENDERING I NEED?

Wilks has over 100 different fender profiles in stock but selecting the profile perfect for you has never been easier. Simply read this blog to discover more about selecting the right fendering or contact the sales team for more information.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SIZE FENDER I NEED?

The size and type of fendering required is often determined by the space available to work with on the boat. The requirements of the profile and the boat itself also influence the size. For more information read more about choosing the right fender profile.

To calculate the amount of fendering required the simplest method is to double the boat’s length, add the boat’s beam (width) plus a further 1-2m to allow for the hull’s radius. This will give a total meterage of fendering required. We strongly recommend taking the time to plan the fitting of your boat in order to be aware of where any bends or mitres will be required before commencing any work.

HOW TO IDENTIFY MY EXISTING FENDERING?

If you are looking for fendering to match your existing profile then the Wilks brochure includes real size and shape drawings to physically place and identify the profile you need. Once identified simply find your profile in the Wilks shop and choose the desired size, quantity and colour. If you are still unsure, please send a detailed and clear image or a small piece of your existing fendering and we can help to identify the profile.

HOW DO I GET CUSTOM COLOURS FOR MY FENDERS?

Custom colours are available upon request with a reasonable minimum order quantity. Simply contact our expert sales team to discuss your requirements.

HOW DO I KNOW IF IT HAS AN END CAP?

You can find out if your desired profile has an end cap available through the product description on the product page in the shop, or in the Marine Profiles 2023 Brochure. Still unsure, then contact our sales team.

HOW DO I FIT THE PROFILE?

Each profile type is fitted slightly differently. Check out our fitting guides for more information.

HOW TO BEND ALI AND STAINLESS STEEL AROUND RADIUSES?

Both material types are able to bend to the average bow or transom easily through the use of slight force, application of heat and/or a rubber mallet on occasions. This information is found in more detail in the respective fitting guides for ALI profiles and Stainless Steel profiles.

IF MY BOAT HAS TOO BIG AN ANGLE FOR FENDERING TO WRAP AROUND, THEN WHAT?

It may involve a further task when installing of creating a mitre. Create a smooth cut at 50-60° on two pieces of identical fendering profiles. Then apply sealant on the join. Please seek further information and instructions before performing this, as it can be a rather technical task.

HOW DO I CLEAN MY WILKS FENDER?

For everyday dirt and grime, a simple wash using water will be sufficient. For the tougher and perhaps more stubborn dirt, a rub with a nylon brush can work well. This is because it can help release any debris from the surface. Although, if using a brush, avoid areas of adhesives or sealants sticking to the main body of the fender. For more information, check out the Wilks Care and Maintenance Guide.
